The Missouri Pacific caboose was built in 1950 in MOPAC’s shops in Sedalia, Missouri. These cabooses were all steel cars (type SSW2) with heavy duty underframes and cushion draft gear. They were big, roomy cars with massive underframes that could take a lot of abuse.
Known first as IGN (International and Great Northern Railroad) #276, the caboose was rebuilt as MP #13385 in 1964 by the International Car Company. It was rebuilt again in 1970 and then listed as “retired” in 1980. Over the years, many modifications were made to the original car, including the addition of electricity, radio equipment, a modern cooler/ice chest and drinking water systems, an oil-fired stove/heater, and comfortable interiors.
The New Braunfels Railroad Museum took delivery of the caboose in July 1987.
